Cleaning Hacks that Don’t Work in Palm Desert, CA; Don’t Use Vinegar to Clean Wood or Leather & More

The internet is a great resource for so many things these days. We have the world at our fingertips, all it takes is a swipe of your finger and your smart phone can find you the answers to some of life’s greatest mysteries. With this luxury also comes a tale of caution, don’t believe everything you read on the internet. Now, we are sure people have the best of intentions and they just want to make your life a little easier, but when it comes to cleaning your home, it’s best to follow tried and true cleaning routines. Today AAA Cleanco have compiled a list of the worst cleaning hacks we’ve come across.

#1- Don’t Use Hairspray to Remove Ink Stains on Carpets

At one point this may have held some truth. Previously, hairspray was almost 100% alcohol. Today the chemistry of hairspray has changed, and you will simply end up with a sticky, icky mess. Skip the hairspray and go straight for the rubbing alcohol.

#2- Don’t Use New Dryer Sheets to Remove Pet Hair from Couch

We know, dryer sheets smell amazing right? The problem with this theory is unused dryer sheets have fabric softener on them that is meant to transfer to clothing in the dryer to keep clothes from coming out stiff. If you rub unused dryer sheets on your furniture, the softener is going to transfer to your favorite chair. This causes not only staining but causes your furniture to become a magnet for more dirt and other debris. Skip this step all the way around. A damp cloth or vacuum with a pet hair attachment with work best for dirt and pet hair removal on furniture.

#3- Don’t Remove Water Ring Stains from Wood with Vinegar

Wooden furniture is manufactured with a finish that is meant to seal and protect the wood from damage. Vinegar is acidic and will harm the finish, eventually removing it altogether. Skip this step and stick with a designated wood cleaner.

#4- Don’t Always Dust Wooden Furniture with a Wood Polish

Back in the days, wood furniture needed a good polishing to keep the wood shining. Nowadays, our wooden furniture comes with a sealed finish that is already polished. When you continually clean your wooden furniture with a polish, it will attract more dust, dirt and pet hair than it otherwise would if you were just using a good microfiber cloth to remove the dust. Skip the over-polishing and give your wooden furniture a good wipe-down with a microfiber cloth instead. Leave the polishing to about once a month, or when your wooden furniture begins to look dull.

#5- Don’t Use Vinegar to Clean Your Leather Sofa & Furniture

The vinegar cure-all strikes again! Vinegar has many beneficial uses, this is not one of them. The acidity in the vinegar will harm the soft leather material of your leather furniture and ruin it. Ditch the vinegar and use a dedicated leather cleaner instead!

#6- Clean Wooden Furniture with Freshly Brewed Tea

Please don’t. Tea is a staining substance and will most definitely color and stain any surface you decide to clean it with, you’ll be wishing you never heard this false cleaning hack.

#7- Don’t Sanitize Dish Sponges in the Microwave

Heat does kill bacteria and germs! But, the length of time needed for heat to kill those germs will likely incinerate your sponge before the germs are killed. Boil your sponges for 5 minutes instead!
